Raise your hand if motivation doesn't always come easy for you... (Ooh, me, me, me!) Whether I'm trying to stay motivated with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, working on new song ideas, or just trying to survive the everyday demands of life - sometimes I needed a little extra oomph to get me through it. I wish I was the kind of person that hopped out of bed every morning with a fire in my soul and a skip in my step... but I'm not. Motivation and a hopeful attitude can be hard work for me BUT the work I put into it really pays off! I start every morning at 7am. I roll out of bed and turn on the local news for about 30 minutes while I start stirring. Then, I make a cup of coffee and settle in on the couch for a little morning quiet time with my bible and prayer journal. After my reading, I eat breakfast and head to the gym. I love cardio and lifting weights. During my cardio, I like listen to a podcast. I'm OBSESSED with podcasts! Right now, I'm really loving Oprah's Super Soul Conversations. This little routine really sets up my day to run smoothly, but it's what I tell myself throughout the day that changes everything! So, here it is: "I can only do what I can do and only I can do what I can do." Nope, it's not a riddle to solve but I'm breaking it down for you just in case right about now you're saying, "Huh?"

It's pretty self explanatory but hang with me for a moment any way... We're SO hard on ourselves! TOO hard on ourselves. We never seem to measure up to the (extremely high) standards that we've set for ourselves. Some days, I wake up feeling like I can take on the world. Other days, I feel accomplished for just changing out of my PJ's and into sweatpants and a t-shirt. When I start to feel overwhelmed by the to-do lists and demands, I simply say to myself, "I can only do what I can do..." This is my way of reminding myself to just approach and knock out one thing at a time. Sometimes, that means knocking out my entire list of things to do and starting on tomorrow's list. Sometimes, it's just emptying the dishwasher or sending that email that I've been putting off. Regardless, when the motivation is gone or the overwhelming nerves creep in, saying to myself "I can only do what I can do..." instantly settles those feelings, re-centers my brain, and forces me to prioritize my day and the demands of it.

So, now that I've conquered motivation (eh, I'm a work in progress) what about the days when you're just down and out and simply don't feel good enough? That's where the second part of my mantra comes in: only I can do what I can do. This is my way of reminding myself how truly unique and special I am. I'm the only one who looks like me. Sings like me. Talks like me. Walks like me. No one else can do what I was born to do because I was the only one created by God to do it the way I do! So, whenever I'm feeling like I can't measure up to those around me and what they're doing, whispering to myself "only I can do what I can do" really helps to talk that negativity down and put it back in it's place.

So, next time you're feeling overpowered or lacking encouragement, trying saying to yourself "I can only do what I can do and only I can do what I can do". Write on a notecard and frame it by your desk. Leave yourself a note on the bathroom mirror. You'll see your spirit shift and change into one full of drive and revitalization!
