Nothing makes me happier than to receive messages from you all! I love reading and connecting to all of your stories! I get messages and emails about how you relate to my music, and little notes saying how much you enjoyed a show. And questions. Oh, do I get a lot of questions! So, I've picked a few to answer and I hope this provides you with an idea of what life is like navigating my way through the music industry and I hope it paints a bigger picture of who I am.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TOURING AND TRAVELING ON THE ROAD? WHAT'S COMING UP?
I absolutely LOVE traveling and touring - Actually, I'm surprised at how much I like it! I'm typically a home body and enjoy being settled... but ironically, if I haven't been touring much, I start to get really antsy and miss the traveling! I love seeing new towns and meeting new people. However, touring can be tough sometimes. It's not for the weak! It involves long days and sometimes you don't sleep as well away from your own bed. But, I've become an incredibly skillful suitcase packer! Coming up, I'll be visiting some new places including Colorado, New York, Ohio, and a few other stops. I'll be performing at various colleges. Sometimes, I'll be performing on campus in a performing arts center or it may be something along the lines of a homecoming kick off celebration and I'm really looking forward to what I've got coming up.
HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR DOWN TIME ON THE ROAD?
When I'm not at soundcheck or on stage, I'm usually hanging out with the band. We like to grab lunch at whatever the local spot is in whatever town we're in. We also like getting out and walking around to scope out the city. If I'm not hanging with them, sometimes I'll use the hotel gym to workout... or I'm probably sleeping! I also love to read so while we're on the road heading to the next town, I'm usually catching up on a good book.
WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS? WHO'S CAREER INSPIRES YOU?
I'm a product of the 90's so I really gravitate towards that sound... especially the voices of the women of that time. I grew up listening to all different types of music but some of my country music heroes are Trisha Yearwood, Faith Hill, Reba McEntire, Patty Loveless and Dolly Parton. I really respect Trisha Yearwood not only for her vocal ability but she's always had a specific sound and she's never really strayed from that. I think figuring out what kind of sound you want to deliver and sticking to what works for you creates longevity... and that's what we're all chasing after.
WHAT ARE SOME GUIDELINES YOU FOLLOW WHEN IT COMES TO SONGWRITING?
It kind of depends on what hat I'm wearing that day, in terms of: if I'm showing up to write a song for myself as an artist or if I'm working on a song for someone else to record. If I'm writing for myself, more recently I've been staying away from heartbreak songs and leaning more towards songs about life and family or faith... feel good songs. I'm happily married so it doesn't make a lot of since to me to write and record break up songs. That's not my life and I can't really relate to those feelings anymore. But I can relate to hanging out with friends and family and appreciating our country or hardworking people, so I gravitate towards songs like that. But, if I'm sitting down to co-write with someone and they have an idea we're working on, there are no rules. I'm there to just be in the room as a songwriter and offer the best ideas that I can.
HOW DID YOUR "YOUTUBE COVER SONG SERIES" COME ABOUT?
I started the "YouTube Cover Song Series" for a couple different reasons. I wanted to have content to share with the people who support my music and covering and uploading my favorite songs was a way to give them something new and interesting every week. The songs that I choose to cover are songs that I like and appreciate. I'm not trying to chase any trends or generate some crazy amount of views, I just like singing good songs and sharing them with everyone. It's been a lot of fun rediscovering some of the music I've always been surrounded by and being able to give someone else the opportunity to discover a song possibly for the very first time... and my version of it? That's really cool to me.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS YEAR?
I'm celebrating a pretty big birthday this year and I'm actually really excited about it! I'm not usually big on birthdays but this year, I don't know... something is different. I'm excited to look back at the end of the year and see the growth. How I've grown as a person and how my music and career have evolved and grown too. I'm looking forward to the new places I'll get to travel to and the opportunities I'll have to play music and hopefully bring joy to people with my songs.
